Abstract: This course handout entitled “Properties of Crystalline Defects” is intended for third-year Materials Physics students within the LMD educational system. It introduces the main types of crystalline defects and explains their influence on the physical and mechanical properties of materials. The manuscript begins with a review of crystal structures to provide the fundamental background required for understanding imperfections in solids. The course then discusses point defects, linear defects (dislocations), two-dimensional defects, and three-dimensional defects, highlighting their origin, characteristics, and effects on material behavior. Special attention is given to the influence of crystalline defects on electrical conductivity and material hardness. This educational material has been designed to help students better understand and assimilate the fundamental concepts of crystalline defect physics and their applications in materials science and engineering.
