Abstract: Remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems are essential tools in geography today. This course offers an initial introduction to these two tools, with particular emphasis on the following questions: How to interpret an optical remote sensing image? How to obtain a land cover map from a remote sensing image? What is a GIS? The course also focuses on the data acquisition and interrogation (selection) methods used by GIS, and introduces students to an initial series of GIS processing operations (geoprocessing).
