| dc.description.abstract | Abstract Introduction Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide and in Algeria. Its development results from a complex interaction between genetic, environmental, dietary, and lifestyle factors. Objective This study aimed to identify and evaluate the main risk factors associated with colorectal cancer by comparing patients with CRC to healthy control subjects. Materials and methods This is an observational case-control study with a descriptive and analytical design, conducted in the oncology department of Ahmed Francis Hospital (Oued Rhiou, Relizane, Algeria) from February to May 2026. A total of 202 participants were included (162 cases and 40 controls). Data were collected using a standardized questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 27. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results Significant associations were found between CRC and several studied factors. Non-modifiable factors, including age, family history, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal polyps, were strongly associated with the disease (p < 0.001). Among modifiable factors, obesity, smoking, chronic stress, and certain dietary habits were significantly associated with CRC. No significant association was observed for red meat consumption, green vegetable intake, or fiber intake. Clinical and disease-related parameters, including TNM stage, metastasis, tumor location, symptoms, and delay before consultation, were also significantly associated with CRC (p < 0.001). Conclusion Colorectal cancer is a multifactorial disease involving both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Prevention is based on a healthy lifestyle and early screening to reduce its incidence and improve prognosis. | en_US |
